Yen at its weakest in decades as BOJ meets
  + stars: | 2024-04-26 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
The yen was parked by a 34-year low on the dollar and decade lows on other crosses ahead of a Bank of Japan meeting where interest rates are expected to stay low, while the dollar dipped elsewhere on softer-than-expected U.S. growth data. The yen , however, fell to its weakest since 1990 at 155.75 per dollar, tracking a sharp rise in U.S. yields as separate figures showed a surge in an inflation measure. The size and persistence of the yield gap has encouraging short yen positions and drives Japanese money into dollar assets such as Treasuries, weighing on the currency. The Bank of Japan already hiked rates at a landmark meeting in March where it ended years of negative interest rates. The New Zealand dollar was a touch firmer in Asia morning trade at $0.5960 and has gained in the previous four sessions.

The companies announced an initial $1.25 billion investment in September, and said at the time that Amazon would invest up to $4 billion. The deal was struck at the AI startup's last valuation, which was $18.4 billion, according to a source. Over the past year, Anthropic closed five different funding deals worth about $7.3 billion — and with the new Amazon investment, the total exceeds $10 billion. News of the Amazon investment comes weeks after Anthropic debuted Claude 3, its newest suite of AI models that it says are its fastest and most powerful yet. But multimodality, and increasingly complex AI models, also lead to more potential risks.

Attendees walk through an expo hall during Amazon Web Services' Reinvent conference at the Venetian in Las Vegas on Nov. 29, 2022. Amazon Web Services on Wednesday announced a new service for health care software providers called AWS HealthScribe, which uses generative artificial intelligence and speech recognition to automatically draft clinical documentation. The service aims to save health care workers time using AI-generated transcripts and summaries of patient visits, which can then be entered into the electronic health record system. As a result, several companies like Microsoft's Nuance Communications, and now, AWS, have been working to build solutions to reduce this administrative burden. "It is clear that generative AI has the power to transform the health care and life sciences industry in many ways," Swami Sivasubramanian, AWS' vice president of database, analytics and machine learning services said at during a keynote speech at AWS Summit New York Wednesday.

Sally Kempton, who was once a rising star in the New York journalism world and a fierce exponent of radical feminism, but who later pivoted to a life of Eastern asceticism and spiritual practice, died on Monday at her home in Carmel, Calif. She was 80. Her brother David Kempton said the cause was heart failure, adding that she had suffered from a chronic lung condition. Ms. Kempton’s literary pedigree was impeccable. Her father was Murray Kempton, the erudite and acerbic newspaper columnist and a lion of New York journalism, the ranks of which she joined in the late 1960s as a staff writer for The Village Voice and a contributor to The New York Times. She was a sharp and talented reporter — although she sometimes felt she hadn’t properly earned her place as a journalist and owed it largely to her father’s reputation.

Amazon is internally scrambling to take advantage of the generative AI boom. AWS just created a new org focused on getting customers to use generative AI to build on its cloud. Amazon Web Services has created a new organization focused on helping customers use generative AI tech on its cloud as the company scrambles to respond to the AI boom, an internal email viewed by Insider shows. "Across AWS (and Amazon), teams are experimenting with generative Al tools to improve builder productivity," DeSantis wrote. "Generative AI will also make it easier to enable a broader group of builders to develop applications on AWS," DeSantis wrote.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy told employees last month that generative AI is a "significant area of focus" for the company. Amazon wants its engineers to start using its own ChatGPT-like artificial intelligence tool at work, as it looks to catch up in the AI chatbot space, Insider has learned. "Amazon CodeWhisperer is an AI-powered coding assistant that provides real-time recommendations in your IDE based on your existing code and comments," the email, titled "Start using Amazon CodeWhisperer today," said. The move signals Amazon's behind-the-scenes efforts to join the AI chatbot race, where it has been noticeably absent in the public space. He also said Amazon's investment in this space will only increase, highlighting the maturation of generative AI, which powers many of the AI chatbots.
The technology, known as generative AI, has been pioneered by OpenAI, the lab behind the ChatGPT writing system and the Dall-E visual illustration generator. Copilot, as well as other tools from Amazon.com Inc., International Business Machines Corp. , and startups like Tabnine Inc. and Magic AI Inc., have quickly found a receptive audience among developers seeking a productivity boost. The AI model behind Copilot is trained on data from GitHub, which houses a popular open-source community where developers contribute and share code. Feb 21 (Reuters) - Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing arm of Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O), on Tuesday said it is collaborating with startup Hugging Face, a software development hub, to make it easier to carry out artificial intelligence work (AI) in Amazon's cloud. While new generative AI services like chat-based search engines from Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) and Alphabet Inc's Google (GOOGL.O) have captured the public's imagination, tech companies such as AWS are also vying behind the scenes to supply the tools and services that software developers will need to weave similar technology into their own products. On Tuesday, AWS said it will work with Hugging Face, a New York-based company that has become a central place online where AI developers share open-source code and models. "For this product collaboration, we're dedicating significant engineering resources to build our shared products," Delangue told Reuters in interview.
